Long pin for portobello mushroom burgers

We LOVE this Portobello Mushroom Burger when we crave a light, vegetarian burger recipe. It’s super juicy, tasty and has a meaty flavor from the portobello mushrooms. Similar to our Mushroom Swiss Burger except without the meat! 15 min recipe you need to try!

Three portobello mushroom burgers on a wooden plate with one of them cut in half showing the texture and filling of the burger and the portobello mushroom. The burgers are surrounded by a plate of french fries

When you’re feeling like a tasty, filling yet light dinner, you’llr each out to make these portobello mushroom burgers in 15 minutes! It’s based off our viral Mushroom Swiss Burger except we used different cheeses and sauces.

Cheese Stuffed Burgers With Onions And Mushrooms are quite similar in flavors here minus the meat of course. The vegetarian version we made today is lighter however and perfect for a summer day–especially on the BBQ! And if you’re in the mood, give our Homemade Best Soft Burger Buns recipe a try! You’ll LOVE them!

If you haven’t guessed, we LOVE mushrooms. I can’t urge you enough to make our hit Air Fryer Mushrooms. They’ve been our go to side dish or snack each time we’re put of ideas!

Why You’ll LOVE a Portobello Mushroom Burger

  • It’s perfect for indoor or outdoor grill cooking.
  • The recipe is ready in 15 minutes!
  • It’s meaty, juicy and so flavroful just like any burger!
  • All you need to make this portobello burger is just 15 minutes.
  • The recipe is very light yet filling, which makes it ideal for sunny days!
  • You can make those for picnics or lunches, as they can be served cold.
  • The type of sauces, cheeses and burger toppings are super versatile, so dress them up to your taste.
  • We’ve used our Spicy Mayo today, however this Garlic Parmesan Sauce, Blue Cheese Dressing or Nacho Cheese Sauce Recipe would be AMAZING!

Ingredients You’ll Need

ingredients for the portobello mushroom burger including portobello mushrooms, seasoning, olive oil, spicy mayo, burger buns, cheddar cheese, onions, lettuce, tomatoes

  • Portobello Mushrooms. These are perfect burger size, they hold their shape perfectly when cooked and have a meaty taste just like a burger!
  • Salt, Pepper, Olive oil. As basic as this seasoning is, it’s perfect. You can add garlic, balsamic vinegar and fresh thyme if you’d like.
  • Spicy Mayo.Other sauces we’ve loved here are: Garlic Parmesan Sauce, Nacho Cheese Sauce Recipe and Blue Cheese Dressing.
  • Burger buns. Use store bought or try our softest, best homemade  Soft Burger Buns.
  • Cheddar Cheese. Any type of cheese works great here!
  • Burger Toppings. We’ve used tomatoes, onions, arugula. Use your favorite burger toppings.

How to Make Portobello Mushroom Burgers

Cook The Mushrooms

  1. Start by wiping off any dirt you see on the portobello mushroom using a damp kitchen towel. Then season the mushrooms on both sides with salt, pepper and olive oil. You can add a teaspoon of balsamic vinegar and 2 cloves of minced garlic along with fresh thyme. Otherwise keep it simple and basic.

  4. Place the top burger bun and it’s ready!

That’s how simple and easy it is to make those wonderful mushroom burgers that are a hot with meat and non meat eaters alike!

Best Tips for Mushroom Burgers

  1. Buy fresh Portobello mushrooms that don’t look wilted or scratched.
  2. It’s best if you wipe them down with a wet kitchen towel or paper instead of washing mushrooms in water.
  3. You can opt for a simple seasoning of salt, pepper and olive oil for this recipe. However you can elevate it with simply 2 cloves of garlic, 2 tablespoons balsamic vinegar and some fresh thyme.
  4. Use an outdoor or indoor grill for this recipe, both work equally great.
  5. Cook the mushrooms for just 5-6 minutes per side until slightly softened.
  6. Use your favorite sauces for the buns: Spicy Mayo, Garlic Parmesan Sauce, Blue Cheese Dressing or Nacho Cheese Sauce.
  7. Likewise, try our homemade Best Soft Burger Buns.
  8. Your toppings are completely to your taste, so as the choice of cheeses.

What to Serve with Portobello Mushroom Burgers?

What can go better with burgers other than some good old Air Fryer Frozen French Fries or Air Fryer Sweet Potato Fries? A simple Wedge Salad, Caprese Salad, Avocado Orange Salad with Citrus Dressing can’t go wrong.

Something like my grandpa’s Pan Fried Potatoes with spicy garlic and herbs would be phenomenal too. Or a light Fish Taco Slaw for crunch! A bright Peach Burrata Salad would be super refreshing!

Is Portobello Mushroom burger Healthy?

It’s lighter than beef or lamb, and mushrooms are loaded with health benefits for sure. To make this burger even lighter, try the lettuce wrap instead of a bun.

What Can you Add to the burgers?

SO MUCH! Something like fried eggs would make it a brunch favorite! Spinach, kale, any greens. Basil Pesto and some Burrata Cheese for a lavish burger. Sun Dried Tomato Pesto, Greek Salad Dressing and feta, or try Pizza Sauce and mozzarella!

How to Store Leftovers?

It’s best to assemble the burgers right before serving. Leftover cooked mushrooms are great for use in any other recipe on their own. Cooked mushrooms can be stored in the fridge for upto 4 days. However assembled burgers are best eaten the same day.

To reheat cooked portobello mushrooms, we love to use the air fryer at 350 degrees for 3 minutes.

If you’re freezing the cooked mushrooms, you can individually wrap them and freeze for 2 months. reheat the same as above once thawed.

What a fabulous looking portobello burger. I love the sharp cheddar on it and that you give a marinade if I want to switch things up. Can’t wait to try this.

This was incredibly delicious! I didn’t miss the meat at all, and the fact that it was lower in calories than the meat based version made it even better!
