Best Burrata Recipes:
What Is Burrata Cheese?
Burrata is fresh mozzarella with even gooier, creamier filler inside. Once you’ve had this, you’ll be a burrata lover for life. Even great, you don’t even need a recipe to enjoy it. The Italians are obsessed with the purity of minimalism, so it’s only natural that they created this rockstar cheese.
Burrata originated from the Italian word burro, which implies butter, which hints at the richness of this stracciatella filled cheese. Burrata is a fresh, soft Italian cheese created from cow and buffalo’s milk.
This white sphere of cheese has a delicate interior of cream and curd and an exterior shell of mozzarella. It’s smooth and flowy texture helps it stand out.
Burrata cheese always comes in a light brine of water and salt and that’s because it’s a fresh cheese. That also means you need to pay attention to the expiry date as it usually doesn’t last for too long.
Burrata Cheese Recipe Ingredients
Because this recipe only requires a few simple components, it’s critical to use quality ingredients. In season, heirloom and cherry tomatoes will take this meal to a new height.
I love highlighting it by placing as it is over a simple everyday salad. It tastes as fresh as can be. You can optionally add some dressing over the burrata cheese or keep it as is.
- Burrata cheese: Available at most of your grocery stores.
- Tomatoes: If utilizing heirloom tomatoes, cut them into circles like you would for Caprese Salad. Cut Cherry tomatoes into half.
- Basil : Give them a hard chop once, but don’t go over them with your knife again. Otherwise, they’ll become dented and squashed. I mix some with the greens and keep the rest for the dressing.
- Greens: I use a combo of lettuce and spinach–any greens would work!
- Fresh Pears
- Pumpkin Seeds for crunch
- Walnuts for crunch as well!
- Shallots
- Extra virgin olive oil: Mina Olive Oil (Moroccan olive oil) is my absolute favorite!
To make burrata cheese salad , you’ll start assembling the greens and dressing them up. Then you’ll arrange the remianing salad ingredients in the order you prefer, and finally a good drizzle of dressing goes on top.
The Burrata Cheese goes over the top like the icing on the cake, and a light seasoning or dressing is optional. Super easy, delicious and show stopping dish!
Dressing The Burrata Cheese
You can swap different vinegars and herbs here.
- Shallots: It’s the base of the dressing and pairs beautifully with thew remaining ingredients. garlic is a great substitute here.
- Olive Oil: I can’t urge you enough to use Mina Olive Oil. I’ve been using it for a while now and read so much about the value of Moroccan olive oil, single origin olive oil and much more! You can buy them on amazon– Give them a try! Also, read more bout this olive oil in this Olive Oil Cake Post.
- White balsamic vinegar: I love the faint sweetness here compared to regular white vinegar. However, apple cider vinegar could work here too!
- Pomegranate Molasses: tangy, sweet and thick. This condiment is a burst of flavor, and you could substitute it with reduced balsamic syrup if you can’t find it.
- Sumac spice: a lemony spice that adds a bright lemon taste. You can substitute it with 1/2 teaspoon lemon zest.
- Honey: a must to balance the flavors and add a touch of sweetness.
- Mustard: The base ingredients to a vinaigrette and emulsifies the dressing.
- Seasoning: salt and pepper.
- Fresh herbs-optional! but a teaspoon of packed fresh oregano, thyme, basil or a combo of those is a game changer!
Simply mix all those ingredients in a bowl using a whisk and your dressing is ready!
Buying Burrata Cheese
Here are basic tips to selecting burrata cheese:
- Select the freshest burrata you can find. This cheese has plenty of water, which soon dissipates. The longer you wait to consume your burrata, the less creamy it will get. If possible, look for cheese that was manufactured within the last day
- Refrigerate the cheese and consume it within 48 hours for the most refined flavor. Burrata will last longer if refrigerated at 40 °F (4 °C). Burrata, even when refrigerated, is best consumed within 48 hours. You can eat it beyond this stage, but it won’t taste as fantastic.
- Take the cheese out of the fridge 30 minutes prior to serving. Leave the burrata out at room temp for 30 minutes before serving to allow it to warm up a little. This will keep the buratta’s creamy core from becoming too firm
How to Serve Burrata Cheese
- On a Crostini, serve burrata alongside meats, fruits, or veggies. Toast or grill pieces of baguette or ciabatta bread and top with burrata and any other additions you choose for a simple appetizer, snack, or light dinner. Look for components with opposing tastes or textures
- Burrata is a delicious addition to a typical salad. Burrata’s mild, buttery taste and creamy texture complement a broad range of fresh vegetables. Slice some in-season vegetables, season with pepper and salt, then top with a couple of slices of finger-torn burrata
- Burrata adds a savory twist to fruit meals. Consider burrata in the same way that you would consider other soft cheeses and dairy products such as cottage cheese or even yogurt. To produce a lovely morning meal, combine fruits, granola, and honey. Burrata may also be combined with fresh fruit salad for a quick snack or dessert
- Add burrata near the conclusion of the cooking process to egg dishes. Burrata may be used the same way as other cheeses, although it doesn’t take long to melt, and the smoothness of the cheese might complement delicate, custardy eggs.
- Add it to your pizza and pasta dishes and bake it into a luscious creamy dreamy cheesy dish!
Burrata Cheese Tips:
- Buy the cheese as fresh as possible as it doesn’t last too long!
- Use it within 48 hours of buying.
- It’s ideal to have burrata sit at room temperature for 30 minutes before serving.
- It’s versatile and can be used raw or cooked (see how to serve).
- Try this simple burrata recipe to get the taste of it and then be as creative as you can!
Burrata vs Mozzarella
So identical, but so unlike. Here’s what distinguishes these two smooth kinds of cheese
Mozzarella is made from curd, obtained by combining lactic ferments and rennet with pasteurized cow’s milk. The following stages are to cut the curd and remove the whey. At this stage, the curd is sliced into strips and kneaded in hot water, either manually or automatically, to make it “spin” or “stretch,” resulting in mozzarella bits. The final step is to immerse the pieces in water to chill them.
Burrata is created from the extended curd of mozzarella. However, it is not the major component of the milk product; instead, it functions as a casing. Inside lies a delicate and creamy filling of stracciatella and cream. Whereas mozzarella has a much more rich flavor and a more flexible texture, burrata is gentler, tastier, and rich in calories, thanks to the cream.
Do you eat the skin of Burrata?
Yes! Burrata covering, which is formed of mozzarella, can be eaten. Its skin is delicious and safe to consume.
What Does Burrata Cheese Taste like?
Burrata is magical combination of textures and a smooth rich creamy taste. It tastes like fresh mozzarella, but richer, creamier with a buttery note. Overall it has a mild taste and that’s why it’s beautifully dressed and used in many recipes!
Is Burrata Cheese Healthy?
As a source of potassium and calcium, it’s a great way to get some minerals in. However like most dairy products, it’s best eaten in moderation as it’s a super rich cheese! The difference however is that Burrata cheese is always shared and spread among all servings 🙂
Is Burrata Cheese Pasteurized?
If you purchase at the grocery stores, then most probably yes it is pasteurized.
