Long Pin for Brownie

Here’s how to make brownie in a mug with a recipe that is so simple yet oh so decadent. Once you’ve made this brownie in a mug recipe once, you’ll be doing it, again and again. It’s so easy, quick, and delicious, so let’s dive in.

A spoon holding off a brownie from the mug with ice cream and caramel sauce showing the fudgy texture of brownies

While making a large cake is super satisfying, we love smaller desserts that are individually portioned like these Mini Cheesecakes or Mini Pecan Pies, Mini Cherry Pie  or  Easy Mini Black Forest Cupcakes. And we LOVE even more, a mug cake like my daughter’s viral Oreo Mug Cake!

Why Brownie In a Mug?

One of the best reasons to make a brownie in a mug rather than cooking it the traditional way is that it is so easy and quick.

You just pop your ingredients into a mug and place it in the microwave for around a minute. The time will depend on your microwave and mug size. It really is as simple as that.

Now to clarify, don’t underestimate how chocolate-y gooey delicious these brownies are! They could be simple, quick and fool proof, but they’re just as DIVINE

Another thing I love is that this brownie recipe is designed to be single-serve. So you can make just enough brownies that you need.

If you just feel like a brownie for yourself then you don’t have to make a whole batch, you can just whip up this brownie in a mug for you to enjoy effortlessly, all by yourself.

Lastly, this is a really cozy recipe to make when it’s all cooked up inside a chocolatey mug and it’s quite impressive if you’re making it for others. It will certainly cure any chocolate cravings you or any guests might have.

My kids also LOVE making this brownie recipe and they brag about it to everyone they know! 🙂

How to Make Brownie In a Mug

Ingredients in a tray for the brownie in a mug recipe including, cocoa powder, flour, brown sugar, oil, chocolate chips. vanilla, milk and oil

The beauty of this recipe is its simplicity.  You’ll need the basic simplest ingredients gathered up. You also need a tablespoon measuring, a small whisk and a small spoon or spatula.

A selection of three mugs showing the size of the 11-14 ounces ready to use for the brownie in a mug

Firstly make sure you use a microwave-safe mug.  A nice thick mug works best. Classically I use a latte mug which ranges anywhere between 11-15 ounce. In other words, if you fill it with water, it should fill about 1 cup and a half.

A hand spooning in flour in the mug to make a brownie in a mug

You firstly need to add all the dry ingredients into the mug. Start with the flour.

A spoon adding i the cocoa powder to the mug

Add in cocoa powder.

A spoon adding in the brown sugar to the mug to make brownie in a mug

Now add brown sugar and pinch of salt.

A hand holding a small whisk to whisk in the dry ingredients in the mug to make brownies

Mix these together well.

Now it’s time to add in your wet ingredients.

A tablespoon of oil being added to the mug using a tablespoon

Start by adding the oil or melted butter (some kind of saturated fat is important here).

A hand adding the vanilla to the mug

Now add in the vanilla.

A spoonful of milk added to the mug to make the brownie in a mug batter

Finally, add milk or coffee (depending on preference).

A tablespoon of coffee being added to the mug to make coffee brownie in a mug (optional)

The coffee adds an extra depth of flavor to the brownie, however it does slightly add caffeine. So if you’re making this for kids for example, it’s probably best to go in with milk only.

A spoonful of chocolate chips added to the batter to finish off the brownie in a mug ingredients

You then need to add in your chocolate chips.

spatula mixing the final bater for brownie in a mug recipe and it's ready for the microwave

Mix both the wet and dry ingredients together and it will form a lovely gooey paste.

A hand holding a brownie in a mug ready to go in the micowave

Now it’s time to cook your brownie in a mug in the microwave. If you want, you can add a few chocolate chips to the top of your mixture before you put it in the microwave for something a little extra.

a hand holding the brownie in a mug right out of the microwave showing the cooked brownies and melted chocolate chips on top

Once cooked you will have a lovely gooey brownie in a mug that you can enjoy right away, with the optional addition of ice cream on top.

The brownie in a mug is BEST eaten right out of the microwave while it’s still warm.

Brownie In a Mug Variations

What’s lovely about this recipe is that you can make it in all sorts of ways to suite what you like.

a cup of espresso surrpunded by chocolate chip to make coffee brownie in a mug

Oreo Mug Cake

Who can resist oreo mug cakes? This viral recipe uses only 3-4 ingredients and it’s seriously fool proof to make, yet DIVINE! Oreo cookies, some milk and baking powder is all you need! Kids make it on their own all the time and they just LOVE IT!

Coffee Brownie in a Mug

You can make this a coffee chocolate mug brownie by adding in coffee instead of milk, or if you’re a white chocolate lover then you can add in white chocolate chips instead of milk chocolate. You could even have both if you really want to jazz it up.

Peanut Butter Brownie In a Mug

Another really lovely variation, that I’m sure some of you will love, is to add peanut butter. There’s nothing quite like the flavour of chocolate and peanut butter combined together to get your taste buds excited. This is especially so when it’s combined in this gooey and fudgey brownie in a mug recipe.

Nutella Brownie in a Mug

Who can resist nutella brownies, like seriously? Dollop a hefty tablespoon or two of nutella in the brownie batter in your mug and give it a swirl. Alternatively you can add the nutella over the top only. Either-way it’s worth making!

three mugs with brownies cooked in them on a tray with a cup of espresso on the side

Nuts, Dried Fruit, Caramel, Orange Zest and More

If you fancy any other ingredient, its really easy to test it out with this recipe and see how you like it. The recipe only takes a few minutes to make and cook so it’s a great one to test new flavours out with.

Some of my favorite add-ons to brownie in a mus are: (swirled in or mixed in or topped only):

  • Homemade Caramel Sauce
  • Orange Zest
  • Raisins/dried fruits
  • Nuts: hazelnuts, walnuts, pistachios or pecans (chopped)
  • Frozen or fresh cherries or raspberries
  • White Chocolate chips/flavored chips

To serve,  you could use whipped cream instead of ice cream if you wish. This is a lovely addition that makes makes this recipe all the more decadent to enjoy.

Brownie in a Mug FAQ

What kind of mug should  I use?

For this recipe it’s best to use a microwave safe, thick large mug so that the brownie cooks evenly throughout and large enough so that the mix doesn’t overflow. You want it to stay contained while its cooking so you can enjoy eating it out of the mug and doesn’t create a mess.

How long do I cook my mug for in microwave?

This is actually slightly tricky. It should be about 1 minute, but this could vary slightly spending on the strength of your microwave. You’ll just have to use your judgement and see which timing works best. Also keeping an eye on your brownie towards the end of the minute is a good idea.

Why doesn’t my brownie have egg?

Because this brownie is cooked in a mug and is intended to be eaten from it, you don’t need quite so strong a structure so by leaving the egg out you get am extra gooey texture.

So there you have it, the most easy and simple brownie in a mug recipe you can enjoy when ever you like with minimal effort.

This was truly amazing! I made mug brownies in an oven a few days ago and these turned out even better. cant believe it only took 1 minute 30 sec in the microwave. Perfect texture and no egginess. I also added hazelnut chocolate and it gave it a good crunch. So happy with how it turned out!
