There’s something about Mahi Mahi that I LOVE! This Baked Mahi Mahi is a simple guide to cooking Mahi Mahi, and if you’re up for grilling here’s our Grilled Mahi Mahi recipe. This is our Taco Tuesday treat and here’s all you need to know about it!
What Are Mahi Mahi Tacos?
Mahi mahi tacos are soft tortillas filled with seasoned, grilled or seared mahi mahi and topped with fresh garnishes. This firm, mild white fish holds its shape beautifully, absorbs bold seasoning, and flakes into juicy, satisfying bites that pair perfectly with bright salsas and creamy sauces.
Unlike cod (often used for battered fish tacos), mahi mahi tacos are usually grilled or pan seared rather than fried. The result is lighter, cleaner, and tastier! Also unlike Halibut, this fish is easier to handle.
What separates average tacos from exceptional ones are proper cooking temperature and a balance of seasoning and textures. Fish tacos are usually paired with a good Fish Taco Slaw, a type if salsa or Mango Pico De Gallo, a creamy avocado crema or jalapeno rich sauce and some corn tortillas.
Why You’ll Love these Mahi Mahi Tacos?
- If you’re looking for a healthy meal, something that you can prepare in less than 30 minutes, this mahi-mahi tacos recipe should be your go to choice.

- Mahi Mahi is a uniquely firm type of fish that holds so well in fish tacos, the firm fish flakes beautifully without falling apart.
- It’s the perfect fish to use if you’re cooking fish on the stove top because of it’s texture, and it also has a mild flavor that absorbs all spices so well.
- It’s a great option for a healthy yet filling meal for taco Tuesdays, a quick snack, or dinner!
- Pairs wonderfully with a crunchy slaw, I make this Fish Taco Slaw for all my taco recipes!
- Another add on which is optional but TOTALLY worth it is a Poblano Sauce which I make with my Air Fryer Lamb Chops and you can watch the video and ingredients there!
Mahi Mahi Tacos Ingredients

- Mahi Mahi Fish: 1-inch thick filets preferred. You can use fresh or fully thawed just make sure to pat dry before seasoning.
- Olive Oil or Avocado oil: To cook the fish.
- Mahi Mahi Seasoning/ Blackened seasoning: salt, pepper, chili powder, oregano, garlic powder, and cumin. You can also add paprika, cayenne, and lime zest.
- Taco Assembly: Corn tortillas or flour tortillas, fish taco sauce below, Fish Taco Slaw, lots of fresh cilantro, sliced jalapenos (optional). You can some fresh pineapples if you’re making Pineapple Salsa which is highly recommended with this recipe!
How to Make Mahi Mahi Tacos

First of all, you’ll be seasoning the Mahi Mahi fish with the spice blend. Mix all the spices in a small bowl. Make sure to coat the fish on both sides evenly and feel free to press down the spice until you feel it has stuck well on to the fish.

Use quality olive oil in a skillet ( I always use Mina olive oil which you can read about in this fabulous Tuna Salad Recipe with Olive Oil Dressing ). Place the fish in to the skillet once the oil is hot over medium-high heat.
You can also cook the mahi mahi on a grill pan if you want to add charred grill lines to it.

Once the fish is golden, flip it and continue cooking on the other side until it’s cooked through. The filets usually need 3-4 minutes per side over medium heat to continue cooking. A fork should cut through them easily.

This is what cooked mahi mahi fish looks like. Firm white fillets, golden brown and well spiced.
Fish Taco Sauce

Make the Poblano sauce for fish tacos while the fish is cooking. Ingredients for the sauce:
- Sour cream
- Jalapeños
- Cilantro
- Lime Juice
- Salt and Pepper
- Olive oil

Blend all ingredients in a blender until smooth.
Assemble Mahi Mahi Tacos

To assemble the Fish Tacos you’ll need:
- Cooked Mahi Mahi
- Poblano Sauce
- Fish Taco Slaw
- Warm Tortillas (charred optionally)
- Jalapeños
- Sliced Avocados
- Cilantro
- Lime wedges

Take a corn or flour tortilla wrap and heat it over a gas stove for 1 minute on each side till it’s charred around the edges. This is optional to add a charred flavor. You can alternatively do this over the grill. Add a piece of Mahi Mahi fish over the tortilla.

Pile in some fish taco slaw and toppings. I used cilantro, avocado slices, sliced jalapenos, and poblano sauce; however, you can use other toppings of your choice too like chipotle mayo, sriracha, hot sauce, or salsa.

And with that your tacos are ready!!
What to Serve with Mahi Mahi Tacos?
Try our Cilantro Lime Rice, some Mexican Black Beans, Black Bean and Corn Salad or Mexican Street Corn Salad.

Also try this Poblano Sauce: it adds a sweet, tangy, and spicy flavor to the tacos. It’s pretty easy to make. Simply, take some poblano peppers and char them slightly. You can substitute jalapenos for poblano. Next, put the charred peppers, cilantro, lime juice, avocado, salt, olive oil, honey, and sour cream/yogurt in a food processor till you get that thick saucy consistency. Drizzle the sauce over the tacos once they are fully assembled.
Fish Taco Slaw: Shredded cabbage, carrots, thinly sliced apples or peaches, cilantro, onions, sour cream, lime juice, salt, pepper, and sugar. Mix all these ingredients in a bowl and your flavourful fish taco slaw is ready to be enjoyed. You can use mayonnaise or Greek yogurt in the slaw too in place of sour cream. The point is to make it creamy.
Taco Bar: If you have guests over, who are eating healthy, or on keto, you can make a taco bar. Just place all the ingredients separately in bowls next to the tortilla wraps, so that the guests can make their own customized tacos.
