What Is Whipped Feta?
Whipped feta is a smooth, aerated cheese spread created by blending traditional feta cheese with olive oil and often a creamy element like Greek yogurt.
It transforms crumbly feta into light, fluffy, spreadable, dip like or saucy consistency. The key is controlled emulsification and proper salt balance.
True feta is traditionally made from sheep’s milk, or a blend of sheep and goat milk. It is brined, aged, and naturally tangy.
While “whipped feta” as a modern spread became popular in U.S. food media in the 2010s, the flavor profile is deeply Mediterranean. Combining feta, olive oil, lemon, and herbs which are ingredients foundational to Greek and Eastern Mediterranean cooking.
Why Does Whipped Feta Work?
Feta cheese is high in protein, high in salt, relatively low in moisture and mostly crumbly due to its brining process
Whipping works because:
- Olive oil coats protein particles
- Yogurt adds moisture
- Blending incorporates air
- Salt disperses evenly
- Fat carries flavor
If you skip fat or liquid, texture becomes gritty, while if you overdo yogurt, flavor becomes flat. Balance is everything.
Why You’ll LOVE Whipped Feta

- Whipping up Feta cheese crumbles with really simple flavoring such as garlic, quality olive oil, and fresh herbs, transforms it to a luscious creation.
- To make the texture super creamy, I’ve tried adding Greek yogurt, sour cream and cream cheese separately. I preferred the tangy yogurt followed by the sour cream.
- Once whipped in the food processor, you can control how thin or thick you’d love the whipped feta to be. You can add a hint of spice, dill, and honey for a delicious contrast.
- The beauty of making whipped feta is not just to use it as a dip, but much more!
Whipped Feta Ingredients

- Feta cheese (Use your favorite feta cheese here, goat or cow or both) at room temperature. Choose: Block feta in brine, sheep’s milk or sheep and goat blend. Avoid pre crumbled feta (it’s dry, chalky, and filled with anti caking agents).
- Greek Yogurt ( You can also use regular yogurt here if you’d like a thinner dip or cream cheese /skyr / sour cream for a thicker dip). It adds creaminess and lightness, balances salt and creates silkier texture.
- garlic
- salt and black pepper
- Honey (for a bit of sweetness)
- You can add lemon juice and fresh herbs if you’d like. It brightens flavor, cuts richness and enhances Mediterranean character.
- Quality Moroccan Olive Oil ( I LOVE Mina Olive Oil)
- You can read so much about my love for Moroccan Olive oil in this Olive Oil Cake, Tuna Salad Recipe with Olive Oil Dressing, Labneh Dip with Zaatar Pistachio Mint Olive Topping, Spaghetti aglio e olio – Olive oil Pasta, Chimichurri Recipe, and this phenomenal Honeynut Squash recipe served over spiced yogurt!
Topping Ingredients:

- Green olives (pitted is easier) that I also use from Mina.
- Fresh thyme (leaves only)
- Walnuts
- More luscious olive oil to bind everything together.
- You can add tomatoes, fresh veggies, pistachios, fresh parsley, red pepper flakes, basil, lemon zest, fresh oregano, and more!
- Dollops of Moroccan Harissa Sauce from Mina too! (Harissa is the Moroccan version of hot sauce, but it’s got so much more flavor than regular hot sauce! You taste the hot pepper flavor along with some spices.

How to Make Whipped Feta
Drain the Feta
Remove the block of feta cheese from brine and pat dry. Excess brine adds too much salt and water, making texture loose.
Prepare a food processor or a high speed blender for this feta recipe. I prefer a food processor by far! And then you’ll prep your ingredients. This dip uses really simple ingredients.
