Long Pin for watermelon salad

Not only is this a refreshing watermelon salad to fill up on, it’s also the best salad to your BBQ! Bright, refreshing and super delicious loaded Greek flavors over watermelon wedges.

I’m not sure if this watermelon feta salad qualifies as a recipe, or more of a recipe inspiration. Either way, it’s totally worth sharing and making!

What I love the most about this watermelon salad is not just the flavors, but also how it’s served and cut up into wedges. It makes for a terrific pick me up salad. And since it’s watermelon season–let’s not forget Watermelon Sorbet 🙂

Let’s talk about the recipe and salad.

WATERMELON SALAD

If you’ve never had watermelon savory, I don’t blame you if you’re skeptical right now. However, I can assure you is that watermelon feta salad is a very very popular and old recipe in Turkey and many parts of the Mediterranean.

There’s something about the sweetness, the crunch and juicy-ness of melon that makes it a great salad option.

I will mention that while I do love watermelon feta salad, I can’t imagine a watermelon caesar salad for example. So yes, watermelon salad is awesome—but only because it’s watermelon feta salad!

What is Watermelon Salad

The Mediterranean way of eating watermelon salad is by combining watermelon with tangy feta, some cucumbers, lots of fresh mint and maybe some onions.

The dressing is usually is a bright citrus and olive oil type dressing. For today’s recipe, I’ve used an old but classic favorite from the blog : Honey Greek Salad Dressing.

What Kind of Cheese Goes well with Watermelon

Feta, without a doubt. The dry crumbly texture of feta goes so well with the juicy melon. The tangy taste of feta pair with the sweetness of watermelon like no other.

Another cheese I love to pair with watermelon is Halloumi cheese. It’s neutral tasting which allows the watermelon to shine. And it’s also very sturdy so the textures work beautifully together! Read everything you need to know about Halloumi cheese here: Halloumi Cheese Salad .

How Do You Cut A Watermelon for this Salad

Since we’re serving this salad as wedges, You’ll need to get rounds of the watermelon about 1 inch thick.

A hand holding a whole watermelon and slicing it into discs

The round or disc is best when sliced off a little off the ends of the melon, so you can have a bigger round/surface area to work with.

A slice or disc of watermelon cut up on a white marble and a white knife ready to cut up the watermelon into wedges

Take your knife and cut each melon disc into eight wedges. To do that, start by cutting the watermelon slice into half, then into fourths, then into eighth’s.

WATERMELON SALAD RECIPE

Now that you’ve got the watermelon cut up into wedges, start piling your toppings.

As always, I will say the sky’s your limit. While classically a watermelon feta salad is purely watermelon feta and mint, I’ve added all my Greek salad favorites.

A whole disc of watermelon cut up into wedges and loaded with Greek salad toppings

For this recipe I’ve got Feta cheese, sliced black olives, sliced cucumbers, baby tomatoes, sliced green onions, fresh mint leaves and fresh thyme leaves.

Pile those toppings (more or less to your taste) in any order you like over the watermelon wedges.

Watermelon Salad Recipe Dressing

A hand holding a jar of Greek salad dressing and drizzling the dresisng with a spoon over the watermelon salad

I made this Honey Greek salad dressing (without adding feta or black olives into it). So basically ingredients are:

  • garlic
  • mustard
  • honey
  • fresh thyme or dried
  • lemon juice
  • White balsamic vinegar
  • olive oil
  • seasoning

Mix all the ingredients in a jar and drizzle that over your loaded wedges.

Simple. Easy. Mouthwatering good!
