Inspired by the coastal taco traditions of Mexico, shrimp tacos showcase the simplicity and bold flavors. They can be grilled, sautéed, or battered and fried, either way they make a great weeknight dinner yet impressive enough for entertaining.

What Are Shrimp Tacos?

Shrimp tacos are tacos filled with seasoned shrimp and layered with fresh toppings such as cabbage slaw, avocado, cilantro, onions, salsa, and creamy Taco Sauce or Poblano Sauce. They are typically served in warm corn or flour tortillas and are known for their balance of tender seafood, crisp vegetables, tangy lime, and rich sauces.

Unlike heavier meat tacos, shrimp tacos feel fresh and light while still delivering bold flavor and satisfying texture. They can be prepared in many styles, from traditional Baja inspired tacos to spicy blackened or grilled versions.

These shrimp tacos are perfectly cooked, juicy shrimp with balanced seasoning, and fresh toppings for crunch and contrast. You can use any creamy sauce like our Taco Sauce or Poblano Sauce spread on warm tortillas.

Ingredients You’ll Need

ingredients for the shrimp tacos, including raw shrimp, taco seasoning, the tortillas, the poblano sauce, the corn cabbage slaw, the avocado, jalapeno, cilantro, lime and other toppings in small bowl

Shrimp

Large or jumbo shrimp are ideal because they stay juicy and provide a satisfying bite. Always choose raw shrimp with a clean ocean scent.

Peeled and deveined shrimp save preparation time. If you find frozen, make sure they’re properly thawed. Dry shrimp before cooking so they brown better because excess moisture inhibits searing.

Olive Oil

Helps spices adhere and promotes even browning.

Fresh Lime Juice And Cilantro

Lime adds acidity that brightens the shrimp and balances richness while cilantro adds fresh herbal brightness. Fresh limes and cilantro dramatically improve flavor. Keep lime wedges for squeezing at the end.

Taco Spices

Chili powder, ground cumin, smoked paprika, garlic powder, onion powder, oregano, and cayenne create a smoky, savory flavor profile. Salt and black pepper are essential.

Tortillas

Corn tortillas are traditional, while flour tortillas are softer and more flexible. Use pliable tortillas with no dry edges.

Corn Slaw

Provides the signature crunch that contrasts with tender shrimp. You can dress it up with a cilantro lime sour cream dressing to make a cilantro lime slaw.

Toppings:

Avocado contributes creamy richness and healthy fats. Red onions add sharpness and color. Cotija cheese adds salty and crumbly richness, but it’s optional.

Sauce

You can use a creamy Taco Sauce or a creamy Poblano Sauce.

  3. If you’re marinating, make sure not to exceed 15 minutes, as prolonged exposure to lime juice can toughen the texture.
  4. Warm tortillas directly over a gas flame for lightly charred edges and better flavor.
  5. Dress the green cabbage slaw lightly so it stays crisp and does not make the tacos soggy.
  6. Prepare all your favorite toppings before cooking the shrimp, since shrimp cook in just a few minutes.
  7. Serve immediately for the best contrast between hot shrimp and cool toppings.
  8. Assemble tacos right before serving to prevent sogginess.

Why Shrimp Cook So Quickly

How Drying the Shrimp Matters

Removing surface moisture helps the shrimp sear and caramelize instead of steaming.

Why High Heat Produces Better Flavor

A hot skillet like a cast iron creates browning on the exterior while preserving a juicy interior.
