Today we’re making the best Tuna wrap and we’re also making a lighter tuna lettuce wrap as a healthier option. This is one of our favorite tuna recipes on the go, and it takes just 15 minutes to make! A great meal prep option and a crowd pleasing recipe. Follow step by step below and video for the ultimate tuna wrap recipe!

A cutting board with tuna wraps, some of them cut up to show the filling and the rest are not. Tuna lettuce wraps are also assembled and placed next to the regular tuna wrap recipe on the cutting board

We never run out of Tuna Recipes to make here, and we LOVE making more! If you search Tuna in our search bar, you’ll find plenty of recipes and inspo to enjoy more of this delicate seafood. And if you’re a fan of wraps, you can’t miss our Buffalo Chicken Wrap. Spicy, quick and so good with detailed step by step on wrapping the perfect wrap.

This particular tuna wrap we make uses fresh Seared Ahi Tuna or Tuna Steak if you call it that. While you cam make it used canned tuna, we love the bright fresh tuna taste and texture. Similar to our Ahi Tuna Salad, we love the freshness of the ahi tuna.

Because ahi tuna is typically seared briefly while remaining rare inside, the wrap delivers a buttery, tender texture that contrasts beautifully with crunchy vegetables and tangy sauces.

If you’re looking for the best tuna salad that uses canned tuna however, can we mention this Tuna Salad Recipe with Olive Oil Dressing? You won’t BELIEVE how tasty it is!

What Is a Seared Ahi Tuna Wrap?

A seared ahi tuna wrap is a handheld wrap made by quickly searing ahi tuna ( also called Tuna steaks) at high heat. Then the tuna is sliced thinly while rare inside. The wrap in involves a flatbread or tortilla wrap, and you can add your favorite veggies and sauces here.

Origin and Culinary Influence

While tuna wraps themselves are modern creations, they are influenced by several global food traditions. We had them in San Fransisco and kept remaking them!

  • Hawaiian Influence: Hawaii popularized ahi tuna dishes, especially poke and lightly seared tuna preparations.
  • Japanese Cuisine: Japanese cuisine perfected rare tuna preparation, emphasizing high quality fish and minimal cooking like Tuna Tataki.
  • California Fusion Cuisine: Modern tuna wraps became popular in California restaurants, combining sushi grade tuna with wraps and sandwiches.

Why You’ll Love This Tuna Wrap Recipe

  • It’s made with fresh Ahi Tuna, but you can substitute canned.
  • The recipe can be made in advance and makes perfect lunch the next day.
  • You can likewise make the wraps with leftover Tuna from this Ahi Tuna Salad for example.
  • The varieties of wrap filling are endless, so make sure you add your favorite veggies.
  • You can use any type of sauce for the wrap like Garlic Parmesan Sauce, Garlic Sauce, Hot Pepper Sauce, Dill Sauce and more!
  • High in protein and good for you wrap!
  • We’ve made a fun variation below for lettuce tuna wraps too which are perfect for lighter meals. same great taste. It’s highly customizable recipe.

Ingredients You’ll Need

A hand holding a board with fresh ahi tuna steaks, and some fresh lettuce, avocado , onions

  • Tuna. We use fresh Ahi Tuna for this recipe, you can however use canned albacore tuna.
  • Tortilla Wraps. Use any type, whole wheat or regular, or the veggies one. You can also use lettuce cups, more on that below.
  • Veggies. Avocado, Onions, lettuce, cucumbers, jalapeño. These are our favorites, but absolutely feel free to swap around. Great choices are celery, tomato, bell peppers, olives, any crunchy veggies work.
  • Sauce: Garlic lemon aioli, or Garlic Sauce, Dill Sauce, Garlic Parmesan Sauce, Hot Pepper Sauce. You can use a simple mayo and sriracha or dijon mustard, or a ready made Hummus Dip.
  • Seasoning and herbs. A simple salt and black pepper is great, we love adding some cayenne pepper and lime (juice or zest or both) for brightness! Fresh cilantro is great but any herbs work.

How to Make Tuna Wraps

Cook the Tuna

Tuna steaks in a grill pan cooking

  1. Since we’re using fresh ahi tuna here, we need to sear it. Similar to the Tuna Steak Recipe, you’ll only cook them for 1-2 minutes. Season them on both sides with salt, pepper and olive oil.
  2. Grill the steaks on medium high heat until you see the grill marks. This takes less than a minute.
Perfect tuna steaks seared on one side, flipped to show the grill marks and continue cooking on the other side
  3. Flip the steaks and cook for another minute on the other side. You’re not going to cook the tuna ll the way through as it becomes dry. A beautiful sear on both sides is all you’re looking for.
A sharp knife on a cutting board slicing the tuna super thin , showing how pink the tuna is on the inside and the beautiful crust
  4. Now slice the tuna using a super sharp knife into strips. And you can start assembling your wrap.

How to Fold a Tuna Wrap

A hand spreading the sauce over the surface of the flour tortilla

  1. Similar to a Burrito, start by spreading the sauce of your choice over the whole surface of the tortilla. We’ve used here good old flour tortilla.
Some veggies piled over the tortilla along the middle including avocados, onions, cucumbers, carrots, and the sliced tuna on top
  2. Then start piling your veggies in the order you prefer making sure to finish off with slices of tuna. We layered onions, cucumber, avocado, shredded carrots and then the tuna.
detailed step by step on how to fold a tuna wrap starting by showing folding the one side of tortilla over the filling
  3. Carefully wrap the tortilla. We shared a super detailed tutorial for how to fold a tortilla wrap in this Buffalo Chicken Wrap recipe. You’ll start by folding the side closes to you to cover the filling.
the second step and detailed how to fold a tortilla wrap is by folding in the corners to secure the filling inside.
  4. Then you’ll fold the edges on both to secure the filling inside.
The final step is rolling the folded tortilla to complete the wrap
  5. And finally you’ll finish off by rolling over the tortilla to complete the fold.
two tuna wraps folded and placed in a grill pan to press down
  6. While the tuna wrap is perfect as is, we love grilling it in a panini press or grill pan to press down the wrap fillings together.
A hand holding a cut up tuna wrap showing the tuna filling with the avocado, onions and more close up
  7. 1 minute per side on medium high heat and you’re all set to cut and enjoy!

Ahi Tuna Lettuce Wraps

A hand holding a leaf of boston lettuce to show how to make tuna lettuce wraps

  1. Start by breaking up the lettuce leaves to look like cups. The ideal lettuce here is this Boston lettuce, also referred to as Bib lettuce or limestone lettuce. Iceberg lettuce comes second to this.
A hand holding a lettuce with the tuna, veggies and sauce drizzled on top.
  2. Pile on your tuna mixture and toppings just as you would with the tortilla wrap, add the tuna on top and finish off with the sauce.
  3. And you’re all set to enjoy for a lighter, healthier tuna wrap recipe.

Tuna Wrap Recipe Tips

  1. Use fresh or canned tuna for this recipe, both work just as well.
  2. If using fresh, make sure you buy quality sushi grade Ahi Tuna and cook it the same way you would with Tuna Steak Recipe.
  3. Avoid overcooking the fish as it dries out and becomes tasteless.
  4. Use your favorite sauces for this recipe, a simple Garlic Sauce or Dill Sauce.
  5. Likewise add your favorite veggies to the wrap.
  6. For the lettuce wrap, use a large cup lettuce leaf like the Boston Lettuce or even iceberg lettuce.

Tuna Wrap Variations

  • Spicy Tuna Wrap: Add Sriracha mayo, Chili crisp and Jalapeños
  • Asian Sesame Tuna Wrap: Add the veggies and dressing from our Ahi Tuna Salad. It includes sesame dressing, shredded cabbage, green onions, sesame seeds and more!
  • Mediterranean Tuna Wrap: Add Tzatziki, tomatoes, cucumber and Feta cheese and dressing from our Tuna Salad Recipe with Olive Oil Dressing.
  • Low Carb Tuna Lettuce Wrap: As shown above, replace tortillas with butter lettuce and romaine leaves.
  • Sushi Style Tuna Wrap: Make it a Sushi Burrito! Add Sushi Rice, avocados, nori sheets, cucumbers.

Leftovers, Make Ahead and Freezing:

The tuna wrap is the perfect next day lunch, snack box and even dinner! It lasts so well in the fridge for up to 3 days. You can likewise make ahead by preparing the sauce, veggies and tuna. Keep that in the fridge and assemble the wrap when you’re ready to serve. We don’t recommend freezing this recipe as it looses texture and freshness.
