Are you one of those who do smoothies every January? I’m certainly not. I do smoothies all year long and probably do less of them during the winter season.
Today’s smoothie recipe however is different. It feels more of an ice cream or a dreamy milkshake.
AVOCADO SMOOTHIE
This is not your lean green smoothie. It’s nothing like that. If you’re looking for that type of veggie loaded power smoothie, I’ve got a terrific one. My Hemp Matcha Kale Power Boosting Smoothie is the one to beat, and it also has avocados 🙂
Today’s avocado smoothie is a simple one. It was a recipe inspired by a local cafe that serves something similar.
Why I love Avocados in Smoothies:
- They add a creamy texture in smoothies without the cream.
- They thicken the smoothie and make it feel like a “smoothie” not a juice.
- Avocados are tasteless which means they pair well with any ingredients in your smoothie.
- They’re loaded with Omega-3, Potassium and Fiber, so they boost the nutritional profile of your smoothie.
- The nutritional profile of avocados not only boosts the smoothie, but it makes you full longer. So a cup of smoothie can fill you up for a while.
- They’re available all year long! And you can use as many as two avocados or half an avocado in your smoothie.
AVOCADO SMOOTHIE RECIPE
Let’s talk about the recipe. It’s basically FOUR ingredients, and if you’re not a matcha person then you can skip it and make it using three ingredients only.
Avocados. Vanilla Yogurt-Greek, Skyr or regular (non dairy option works too!). Sweetener such as a touch of honey, maple syrup or agave. Matcha green tea.
The basic ingredients are the avocado and vanilla yogurt. You may need half a teaspoon of sweetener or a tablespoon depending on your taste.
However if you do add the matcha green tea, you’ll need anywhere from a tablespoon to three tablespoons of sweetener also depending on your taste.
All the ingredients go right in your blender. Blend and it’s ready.
Now this will feel more like a thick smoothie bowl which can be scooped as is or thinned out. I love thinning the smoothie out with a half cup of orange juice or even water.
I will admit that plenty of times I don’t thin it out, I just drink it think and creamy. Other times I make a bowl and add some chocolate nut clusters and berries over it. Just like the photo below.
I will also admit that even if I do drink it as a smoothie, I still love to add some crunchy granola or clusters of nuts and seeds on top for an added texture.
SMOOTHIE TIPS
- Use soft ripe avocados for extra texture and body to your smoothie.
- Any type of yogurt works in this recipe, choose your favorite. If you’re making this a vegan smoothie, use any non dairy yogurt.
- when you add the sweetener, start with a teaspoon and taste. Depending on your taste and brand of vanilla yogurt, you may need anywhere from 1 teaspoon to a few tablespoons.
- Matcha is a powerful anti-oxidant and a little bit goes a long way. So don’t add too much!
- You don’t need a high quality blender to make this smoothie, any blender works well!
- If the smoothie feels too thick for your taste, thin it out with juice or even water.
- To make a smoothie bowl, simply pour the smoothie into a bowl and top it with granola, nuts, berries and your favorite toppings.
- This smoothie is best enjoyed within two days. Keep any extra smoothie in the fridge.
ENJOY!
