Long pin for watermelon slushie

If you’re looking for a refreshing summer drink to keep you nice and cool in the summer that’s also healthy, then this Watermelon Slushie is the perfect solution. Combining freshly frozen watermelon with your favorite soda, you make this easy but delicious watermelon slushie recipe in no time.

Why Watermelon Slushie?

Traditional store-bought slushies are full of colors and sugar that isn’t necessary. But you don’t need to go to the store to have a satisfying slushie.

You can use this homemade watermelon slushie recipe to whip one up at home with healthy fruit for a satisfying and cooling drink.

A wooden board with three cups of watermelon slushie and some watermelon wedges, lemon slices and fresh mint around it

And it won’t have lots of excess sugar or additives. It’s a lot simpler to make than you might think, so it certainly worth giving this recipe a go at home.

This recipe is a huge inspiration from my Watermelon Sorbet. Which is a no machine sorbet recipe that coumes together with a video and you can make it in a food processor! Plus it has a secret boosting ingredients which I LOVE!

Another favorite all summer watermelon recipe is my Watermelon Salad Wedges. You need that recipe in your LIFE, believe me!! 🙂

How to make Watermelon Slushie?

Firstly you need to chop all of your fresh watermelon into small-medium chunks. Make sure the watermelon is cut up into small cubes that are similar in size so they freeze equally.

Now place them into freezer bags which then need to go into the freezer. Here you could probably portion the watermelon into serving sizes or freeze a large bag for a bigger crowd.

watermelon cubes placed in a ziploc bag and ready to freeze

It should take a couple of hours for your watermelon to freeze properly.

Once your watermelon has fully frozen, take them out and place them into a strong blender.

You now need to add water or your favorite liquid to the blender and blend together with fresh lemon juice. I added some lemon soda drink. You could use ginger-ale, soda water, lemonade, or even just plain water.

Using water will make this watermelon slushie recipe not so sweet, but if you want more sweetness you can use some other liquid options as I mentioned above.

The addition of the fresh lemon juice gives this slushie an extra zing of freshness so I always include a squirt.

The trick is to blend and add water to your taste. You’ll probably notice that the slush will look like loose ice cream at first and then quickly start to melt at the bottom.

Here’s where you need to be careful as you add the extra liquid. Just take this into consideration as you’re blending. Also consider when you’ll be serving the watermelon slush. The sooner the better! This is NOT a make ahead recipe for sure! 🙂

Finally, don’t stress if it starts to melt out sooner, it will still be super cold, refreshing and taste like a watermelon slushie anyway! So just enjoy! 🙂

Watermelon Slush – Variations

This is a super simple recipe, and really versatile. It really doesn’t matter what liquid you blend the watermelon with and testing different flavors out can be fun. For example, pineapple juice with the watermelon could be really tasty and give it a tropical twist.

You can also add in some fresh summer fruits such as strawberries or raspberries into the blender. This will bring in some extra flavor and make it more summery and flavorsome to enjoy.

Herbs-consider blending fresh mint or basil for a delicious bright twist!

There are lots of ways you can experiment with this recipe to make it your own as a really enjoyable cooling summer drink so get creative.

Watermelon Slushie Recipe

That’s really all there is to making this Watermelon slushie recipe. It’s super simple yet super delicious and is a perfect cooler for a hot summer day.

The flavor of watermelon in this recipe is particularly refreshing as it’s such a fresh fruit. There’s no reason not to give this watermelon slushie a go on the next boiling hot day.

Watermelon Slushie Tips

  1. Chopping your watermelon into small enough chunks is quite important to make sure you don’t get too many ice chunks in your slushie. If you whizz up chunks that are too big you may end up with a slushie that is a bit gritty and it won’t be quite as nice.
  2. You need to drink and enjoy your watermelon slushie as soon as you have made it. You can refreeze this recipe as it will just turn into a big block of ice you couldn’t do anything with. It will also start to melt quite quickly so you definitely need to make this recipe when you intend to enjoy it.
  3. You can make this slushie as thick as you like, it’s all about preference. To make it thicker, just add less liquid. To make it runnier, just add more.
  4. If you want to give this recipe an extra health kick, you can add in some collagen peptides to the liquid before blending it together with the frozen watermelon. Or you may add a hydration stick to it!
