If you love hot dogs and looking for the easiest hot dog recipe, try these Air Fryer Hot Dogs! It may sound crazy, but cooking your hot dogs in the air fryer makes them juicy on the inside and unbeatably crisp on the outside. Plus it only takes 5 minutes, what can beat all of that? Video below for a fun twist on dressing up your hot dogs too!

Ok so yes I love my air fryer. And I am never running out of ways to use it! It’s probably my favorite kitchen appliance, like hello Air Fryer Chicken Wings, Juicy Air Fryer Whole Chicken, Pizza Rolls in the Air Fryer, Crispy Air Fryer Baked Potato, Air Fryer Salmon and MORE!!

The trick to air fryers (after trying and buying so many) is that I find the basket air fryers to be my favorite. The air fryer basket produces a crisp like no other to the food!

What are Air Fryer Hot Dogs?

Air fryer hot dogs are made with pre cooked sausages heated and lightly crisped in an air fryer, often served in toasted buns. It’s the fastest way to achieve that perfect snap, juicy interior, and lightly blistered skin without a grill or boiling water. Here’s our Grilled Hot Dogs guide.

This method replicates the best parts of grilling (browning plus texture) with consistent, foolproof results in under 10 minutes. Air frying relies on rapid circulating hot air, surface dehydration and even heat distribution. This results in juicy hot dogs, crisp blistered skin and even cooking.

Why You’ll LOVE Hot Dogs in Air Fryer

  • They cook in 5 minutes!
  • hot dogs in the air fryer have an amazing crisp on the outside as if they’re grilled!
  • They’re super juicy! YES!
  • They can be placed back once cooked, and put in a bun with cheese to melt–see video!
  • You can make them from frozen!
  • Use endless toppings on the hotdogs!
  • Make bacon wrapped hot dogs in air fryer
  • It’s quick and easy cleanup compared to any other way!
  • You can toast the buns in the air fryer for another level hot dog!
  • You really can use any size hot dogs you like here, I used the smaller ones as my kids prefer them!
  • Seasoning is not necessary, but I love just adding some salt and pepper and a drizzle of oil to the hot dogs

Ingredients You’ll Need

  • Avoid: Excess fillers and low meat content

Hot dog buns

  • Soft white buns (classic)
  • Brioche buns (richer)
  • Potato buns (slightly sweet, durable)

Oil Spray

Extra: Your favorite toppings, sauces, cheeses, condiments and more below are optional.

You can make this recipe using frozen hot dogs as it is. I prefer setting the temperature to 350 degrees F and adding an extra 3-4 minutes of cooking time. This allows the hot dogs to thaw while air frying!

Bacon wrapped Hot Dogs in air fryer

Wrap the hot dogs in bacon and follow the recipe as is, adding an extra 2-3 minutes of coking time while shaking halfway.

Hot dog Toppings

While the hot dogs are perfect as they are, I love making my cheesy jalapeno hot dogs.

Expert Tips for Air Fryer Hot Dogs

  1. Start with quality hot dogs. Always choose the ones you like and enjoy on a regular.
  2. Scorching or slicing the hot dog will allow the hot dogs to cook without bursting in your air fryer. You can make small slits or slice it in half lengthwise.
  3. Toasting the buns in the air fryer takes your hot to the next level! To toast the buns you only need 2 minutes!
  4. Make sure the hot dogs are placed in a single layer in your air fryer.
  5. Air frying the hot dogs produces a crisp on the outside just like the BBQ! So don’t crowd the air fryer basket.
  6. Use foil or liner only if necessary because it can reduce crisping
  7. Hot dogs are best air fried at 400 degrees, however if you’re using frozen hot dogs, it’s best to drop the temperature to 35p and add an extra 4 minutes.
  8. Make different variations to the humble hot dog sandwich. Try adding nacho toppings (hello Nacho Cheese Sauce Recipe). And try to dress it with this crowd pleasing Blue Cheese Dressing–specially for bacon wrapped hot dogs. Finally, try the cheesy jalapeno hot dogs above–SO Good!

What if Hot Dogs Burst Open

  • Temperature was too high for air frying
  • Cooked too long
  • No scoring was made before air frying

Why are Hot Dogs Dry

  • Overcooked
  • Low fat hot dogs were used

Why Are they Not Browning Enough

  • Temperature too low when air frying or they were cooked in an overcrowded basket

What if There’s Uneven Cooking

  • No flipping or shaking halfway so the airflow was blocked

Why are Buns Too Dry or Hard

  • Over toasted or you used bread with not enough fat

What if Buns Are Soggy

  • You didn’t toast them enough
  • Too many wet toppings were used on the bread

Why Do they have No “Snap” Texture

  • Skinless hot dogs were used, overall lower quality.
