Recipe Notes

TIPS for FOOL PROOF BROWNIE IN A MUG

  • Choose the right mug! A classic latte mug that varies from 11 ounce to 15 ounce is perfect.
  • Have good quality cocoa powder to start with as this will be the dominant taste in your brownies.
  • If you're making several mug brownies, then it's best to have a separate tablespoon for the wet and one for the dry.
  • Understanding how to cook the brownies in your microwave is KEY to success. My Microwave at high power has the brownies ready in exactly 1 minute and 15 seconds. Even 1 minute and 20 seconds works.
  • It's crucial to test your microwave starting at 1 minute and 15 seconds and then check.
  • Don't over bake the brownies as they will dry out.
  • It's best to enjoy the brownies while they're still warm.
  • Serve them with ice cream, more chocolate chunks and Homemade Caramel Sauce for a divine treat!
  • What kind of mug should  I use?

For this recipe it’s best to use a microwave safe, thick large mug so that the brownie cooks evenly throughout and large enough so that the mix doesn’t overflow. You want it to stay contained while its cooking so you can enjoy eating it out of the mug and doesn’t create a mess.

How long do I cook my mug for in microwave?

This is actually slightly tricky. It should be about 1 minute, but this could vary slightly spending on the strength of your microwave. You’ll just have to use your judgement and see which timing works best. Also keeping an eye on your brownie towards the end of the minute is a good idea.

Why doesn’t my brownie have egg?

Because this brownie is cooked in a mug and is intended to be eaten from it, you don’t need quite so strong a structure so by leaving the egg out you get am extra gooey texture.

  • Brownie In a Mug Variations

What's lovely about this recipe is that you can make it in all sorts of ways to suite what you like.

    Coffee Brownie in a Mug

You can make this a coffee chocolate mug brownie by adding in coffee instead of milk, or if you’re a white chocolate lover then you can add in white chocolate chips instead of milk chocolate. You could even have both if you really want to jazz it up.

Peanut Butter Brownie In a Mug

Another really lovely variation, that I'm sure some of you will love, is to add peanut butter. There’s nothing quite like the flavour of chocolate and peanut butter combined together to get your taste buds excited. This is especially so when it’s combined in this gooey and fudgey brownie in a mug recipe.

    Nutella Brownie in a Mug

Who can resist nutella brownies, like seriously? Dollop a hefty tablespoon or two of nutella in the brownie batter in your mug and give it a swirl. Alternatively you can add the nutella over the top only. Either-way it's worth making!

Nuts, Dried Fruit, Caramel, Orange Zest and More

If you fancy any other ingredient, its really easy to test it out with this recipe and see how you like it. The recipe only takes a few minutes to make and cook so it's a great one to test new flavours out with.

Some of my favorite add-ons to brownie in a mus are: (swirled in or mixed in or topped only):

    • Homemade Caramel Sauce
    • Orange Zest
    • Raisins/dried fruits
    • Nuts: hazelnuts, walnuts, pistachios or pecans (chopped)
    • Frozen or fresh cherries or raspberries
    • White Chocolate chips/flavored chips

To serve,  you could use whipped cream instead of ice cream if you wish. This is a lovely addition that makes makes this recipe all the more decadent to enjoy.
